NAN-Wide Justice Summit
“Access to Justice: Empowering Communities”

The Nishnawbe-Aski Legal Services Corporation (NALSC) is directed by the NAN Chiefs-in-Assembly by “Resolution 12/57: Justice Summit” to host a NAN-Wide Justice Summit which will bring together First Nations and Justice Personnel to look at ways to improve the Administration of Justice in the Nishnawbe Aski Nation territory.
The justice summit will encompass all service related issues in delivering justice to the NAN communities. There will be an emphasis placed upon restorative justice practices and to increasing the number of diversions to restorative justice programs, as well as building capacity within the communities to deal with their own justice issues. In addition to restorative justice related topics, emphasis will also be placed on:
- Band By-Law Enforcement
- Bail Issues
- Impact of Bill C-10
- Over-incarceration of Aboriginal peoples
- Victim Witness Services
- Drug Epidemic
The NAN-Wide Justice Summit will invite, in addition to the NAN Chiefs, NAN Executive, and Elders, all of its funding agencies and their Ministers and/or his/her representative (Legal Aid Ontario, Department of Justice, Ministry of the Attorney General, Victim Services, Ministry of Children and Youth Services), all justice personnel who serve the NAN territory including Judges, Crowns, Lawyers, Legal Aid Panel, Justices of the Peace, Probation, OPP, NAPS, APS, Victim Witness workers, and others within the justice system.
