Introduction
Nishnawbe Aski Legal Services Corporation is commited to
improving the quality of justice within the NAN communities. It is
recognized that the members of remote communities are not always
well served by the current Canadian legal system.
Moreover, the existence of constitutionally protected Aboriginal
and Treaty rights further complicate the design and delivery of
legal services to the NAN communities. Nevertheless, Nishnawbe-Aski
Legal Services' Public Legal Education (PLE) Program strives to
work to improve the quality and delivery of justice in the NAN
COmmunities, and to protect the special rights of its members.
Concerns of Nishnawbe Aski Nation
Communities
There has been a long standing expressed concern regarding the
quantity and quality of Public Legal Education available for
members of the Nishnawbe Aski Nation. This concern has been
expressed by both Native and non-Native people who live and work in
the justice field within the bounds of the Treaty No. 9 region.
In response to this concern, Nishnawbe-Aski Legal Services
Corporation (NALSC) is developing a comprehensive and on-going PLE
program for adult participants and school aged students. The
development of various legal workshops are currently underway, with
input from the Community Legal Workers (CLWs) and the communities
themselves. Thus, educational strategies and materials to be
distributed by NALSC's PLE program will be geared towards the
specific targets of the programs.
