Background

The VWLS has been in existence since 2000/01. It was created with the understanding that there is a definite need for Nishnawbe victim and witness representation. Our program handles all cases pertaining to criminal law.

Presently, only one full time Victim Witness Liaison is available, therefore the Victim Witness Liaison cannot cover all court sessions. However, our goal is to expand the program to fully meet the demands of such a wide territory.

Another goal we are presently pursuing is negotiating a protocol that would guarantee a working partnership with the Ministry of the Attorney General's Vicitm Witness Programs and Services. At present, we have established levels of cooperation from Crown Attorneys and other justice personnel.

Furthemore, our Vicitm Witness Liaison has conducted several presentations throughout NAN communities; this has brought positive attention and awareness to our program.

We continue to look for opportunities that will create more awareness for the Victim Witness Liaison Services, i.e. workshops, conferences and during court sessions.
