Community Youth Justice Initiative
The Community Youth Justice Initiative is modelled after the proven Restorative Justice model used by NALSC. Community Youth Justice Workers (CYJWs) receive youth diversions from the courts, police and probation officers in the communities that they service. Once diverted, the CYJWs begin to plan for a justice circle to take place where the youth will be afforded the opportunity to fully understand their behaviour and how it has affected those around them in a manner that is traditionally and culturally suited to them. Through the involvement of the victims, offenders and the community, the CYJWs facilitate healing circles to work towards a resolution that affords reparation, healing and successful re-integration while preventing further harm. The youth will be held accountable for his/her actions.
Proper follow-up and monitoring to ensure that youth have fulfilled their undertakings pursuant to the circle's agreement is made.
The CYJWs provide Restorative Justice training and awareness workshops in the communities to build capacity at the local level on an ongoing basis.
Assistance in the development of local justice committees in the communities is also a work priority. Once developed, proper training in Restorative Justice circle facilitation is undertaken by the CYJWs and co-facilitation of circles with members of the committee is made when and where possible.
The Youth Justice initiative is limited to youth between the ages of 12 and 17 years of age at the time of pre-charge or post charge of an offence.
Efforts are made to establish working protocols with local police detachments, the Crown Attorneys office and other service agencies.
