Objectives of the Public Legal Education Program


PROGRAM OBJECTIVES


  1. To ensure that the NAN community members and others are aware of NALSC and the PLE program and the services available.

  2. To provide legal information in plain language and in an easy-to-understand format.

  3. To provide and enhance access to legal information in the NAN communities in order to ensure that community members know their rights and responsibilities in different legal areas of importance.

  4. To increase public knowledge and understanding of the law, lawyers and the legal system and the role of First Nations within that system.

  5. To provide cross-cultural education to lawyers, judges, court personnel, police officers, etc.

  6. To ensure that the communities are aware of changes in legislation and the impact of those changes.

  7. To provide the best possible mix of service delivery models by continuously monitoring services and implementing any adjustments needed to meet changing requirements or take advantage of new opportunities.

  8. To engage in "preventive law" by offering PLE activities to children and youth in the NAN communities.

  9. To periodically review the effectiveness of the PLE program and reassessing the needs of the communites in order to remain responsive to their changing needs and to tailor PLE activities to those in need.
