The Corporation has a strong commitment to providing public legal education. The Public Legal Education (PLE) Coordinator has designed and delivered public legal education workshops to student members of Nishnawbe-Aski Nation and to judges, the legal profession and employees of various government agencies. The Community Legal Workers (CLW) also assist in the design and delivery of public legal education.
Cross Cultural Workshops
The Corporation takes an active role of improving the delivery of justice within the NAN communities. As judges, lawyers and court officials visit the communities it is important for the court officials to be sensitive to the traditions of the communities. The Cross Cultural Workshops are hosted by the Corporation where speakers and guests from various NAN communities are invited to speak to those that are involved with the courts. The role of the Cross Cultural Workshops is to inform participants of the language[s] spoken, programs within the community, population and a general community profile.
Clinic Day Requests
Clinic Days are requested when Chief and Council, community service providers, and/or community members request through the Community Legal Worker an information session on topics pertinent to that particular community. A lawyer from the Legal Services panel list is contacted and covers such topics as band by-laws, firearms legislation and applications, and birth registrations. Clinic day requests are vital and allow the information needs of the communities that are involved to be met.
